Buying a Used Car: How to Avoid Getting Scammed

Last updated: 08/16/2026

The used car market attracts its share of scammers. Here are the most common tactics and how to protect yourself, whether you're buying from a private seller or a dealer.

The Most Common Scams

Odometer rollback
This is one of the most common scams. A vehicle showing 60,000 miles could actually have 120,000. Simple safeguard: pull a vehicle history report through Carfax or AutoCheck using the VIN (usually a small fee, sometimes free if the seller shares one) and compare the mileage history against service records.

A hidden salvage or flood title
A vehicle declared a total loss by an insurer and later "fixed up" outside proper channels can be resold without the buyer knowing. Always check the title status — salvage, rebuilt, flood, or clean — through a vehicle history report or your state's DMV before buying.

The fake urgency
"I'm moving out of state tomorrow, need to sell fast," or "I already have 3 people interested, decide quickly." This is a classic pressure tactic to stop you from checking things calmly. An honest seller will give you time to do your due diligence.

A deposit before you've seen the car
Never send a deposit to "hold" a vehicle you haven't seen and test-driven in person. This is one of the most reliable red flags for a scam.

Unusual payment requests
Be wary of any request for wire transfers to an unfamiliar account, payment apps, gift cards, or cashier's checks you can't verify. For larger amounts, a verified cashier's check (confirmed directly with the issuing bank) or an escrow service are safer options than cash for large sums.

How to Protect Yourself

  1. Always meet the seller in person, ideally at the address on their ID or the vehicle's registration.
  2. Verify the seller's identity matches the name on the title.
  3. Never pay before you've seen, test-driven, and inspected the vehicle.
  4. Complete a signed bill of sale with both parties' information, and keep a copy for yourself.
  5. Notify your state DMV of the ownership transfer within the required timeframe (this varies by state, typically 10–30 days) to release yourself from liability after the sale.

Why Buy Through a Trusted Marketplace

Buying through a platform that reviews listings and supports the transaction process significantly reduces risk compared to an isolated classified ad with no oversight. At SpeedyCars, we prioritize transparency in every listing, whether it's a vehicle or a used auto part.
